Nova Scotia Quilt Blocks

Nova Scotia Quilt Blocks

Flying Geese

1.      Cut two strips 3 ½ by 12 ½ inches( green fabric)
2.      Cut 4 triangles 3 7/8 inches square, then cut them in half on the diagonal(these are the background for the flying geese)
3.     Cut four squares of different colours 7 ¼ inches and then cut them in 4 quarters on the diagonal. You will only need one triangle of each colour. If you wish you can make the geese all one colour.
4.      Sew the background to the triangles Sew the triangles together in a column and then sew the long strips to each side.

Railroad Block

1.     Cut 16 strips 2 inches by 6 ½ inches. You will need 4 of each colour
2.     Sew the strips together to make 4 blocks. Rotate the blocks as you sew them together to make the block.

Pinwheel Block

1.      Cut four patches of background fabric 4 ½ inches
2.     Cut 10 squares 3 inches wide  of each of the background fabric and the coloured fabric.
3.     I sewed the fabric together along the diagonal line ¼ inch on either side. Cut the fabric apart on the diagonal and then square up the squares to be 2 ½ inches before sewing them together. You can cut the fabric in the pinwheels 2 7/8 if you wish but I alwys prefer to use 3 inches so the triangles are not wonky.

September Minutes and Retreat Information

What an awesome turnout for our meeting!  We should have a great year.
Financial stuff:  We have $975.97 in our fund--$250.00 will go to our hall rental, $40.00 will go to purchase a big ironing board.
Fat quarter winner was Leah:  she has chosen Halloween for the theme for October.
I talked to Lea, the contact I have at Grandview Manor. They would like to have some fidgit pads for the Alzeheimer unit. I will meet with her before the next meeting to get more details. She talked about having it like a longer version of the bibs we made so that they would not fall on the floor and could be more secure for the patients. She said they could not have any buttons but certainly taggies and zippers and lots of texture should be included.

RETREAT--Friday Oct. 16 and Saturday Oct. 17 at South Berwick Community Centre
Please let me know if you are coming!  This is to ensure we have enough space for everyone.
There is no cost for this event for members of the group.
I will open the doors at 9 AM on Friday
Bring your lunch and a munchie or two for lunch
We plan to go to the Legion for supper
On Saturday I will make soup and hopefully others can bring a munchie( or use leftover ones from Friday)
If you still wish to sew after supper on Saturday we can go to Jonnies for supper.
I will bring tea/coffee
Power may be an issue so please do not plan to use a mini iron at your sewing station. I will bring two ironing boards and two irons to use. I do not want to have circuit breakers tripping ! I will set up cutting stations upstairs to conserve space. The irons may need to go upstairs, we will see how many tables we need.

2 yards of novelty print for outer border and binding (multi-color)
1/2 yard of DARK print for inner border

32 strips, 2.5" x 42", of assorted light tan prints, (or whites, or other LIGHT color, for blocks
5 yards of fabric for backing
75" x 75" piece of batting (We will not be using the batting or backing in class)
CUTTING:
From EACH of 17 DARK PRINT and 17 LIGHT PRINT strips, cut:
2 rectangles, 2.5" x 5.5" (34 dark and 34 light total)
5 rectangles, 2.5" x 4.5" (85 dark and 85 light total)
2 squares, 2.5" x 2.5" (34 dark and 34 light total)
From EACH of 13 DARK PRINT and 13 LIGHT PRINT strips, cut:
2 rectangles, 2.5" x 5.5" (26 dark and 26 light total)

4 rectangles, 2.5" x 4.5" (8 dark and 8 light total)
6 squares, 2.5" x 2.5" (12 dark and 12 light total)
If you wish to 'slash your stash', and cut from scraps, you will need the following:
From DARK PRINTS, cut:
60 rectangles, 2.5" x 5.5"
144 rectangles, 2.5" x 4.5"
84 squares, 2.5" x 2.5"
From LIGHT PRINTS, cut:
60 rectangles, 2.5" x 5.5"
144 rectangles, 2.5" x 4.5"
85 squares, 2.5" x 2.5"
It is important to use DARK fabrics, to CONTRAST with your LIGHT fabrics, so that the pattern is evident.Blocks in this quilt are 8.5"square, and the configuration is 6 blocks x 6 blocks, with a pieced sashing between. (TOTAL of 36 blocks) If you wish to make a QUEEN size quilt, you would want a 8 blocks x 9 blocks configuration, or a TOTAL of 72 blocks-exactly DOUBLE the amount. So, you would need to DOUBLE the amount of fabric, and DOUBLE the amount of strips cut, for a QUEEN size quilt. Allow extra fabric for both your enlarged borders, in this case.
ANY QUESTIONS? davendy@hotmail.com I'd be happy to answer

them! Really looking forward to our time together!

A sewing machine, in good working order
A square, at least 9" X 9"
Several bobbins, and thread in neutral color
Quilt pins
Scissors
Seam ripper
Cutting board/ruler

Anything else YOU think you need!

October Meeting Notes 2012

Minutes of Oct. 25, 2012 Fundy Quilters
Information on the Jelly Roll Workshop with Jan Weedon was shared.  Janet showed a sample of a finished quilt.  The workshop will start at 9:30.  Bring finger food to share. Janet will make a big pot of soup and we will have a potluck lunch.  There is no charge for he workshop for members . Non-members pay $20.00 ( which will make them paid up members of Fundy Quilters)

Our November meeting will be a Quarter Quction. Bring something to auction and some quarters for bidding. Our charity this year will be the Berwick Legion.  Our spring fundraiser will be for the IWK. People can donate items for a table at the Centreville Baptist Church Quilt Show in May 2013.

Janet showed the finished tree skirt we made for Grandview Manor.
We took in fat quarters to send to Pat O’Brien.
The fat quarter flannel draw was won by Heather. Next month the fat quarter theme will be Christmas or snowman prints.

We discussed the challenge quilt project and we decided to use The Essential Quilt Sampler Book by Lynn Edwards. Janet has ordered copies for everyone who asked for one. The price will be $23.69 each including tax and delivery.
We decided to buy something called bed height lifters to put under our cutting table at the manor. This will make it easier to cut out fabric there and we can store it in the tub we keep there. Janet will find out where to buy it. ( moved by Ann and seconded by Heather)
Show and Tell:
Molly had 2 runners made with “Little Twister” tool and also a wall hanging of a cat with a sewing machine
Ann showed a Puppy Quilt
Janet showed a Halloween wall hanging
We also decided to reinstate the snack at the meeting.   This is to be a very light snack—and Janet will bring the tea/coffee each month.
